SANCHEZ, RUSSELL | BIRD JAR
Russell Sanchez is a potter from San Ildefonso and is still active today. He was born in 1966 and at the age of 12 learned to pot from his Aunt Rose Gonzales. Russell was also very influenced by Tony and Popovi Da and Dora Tse-Pe, who is recognized by collectors worldwide. Russell today is an award-winning artist that continues to innovate in Contemporary American Indian Pottery.
Russell made an elegant jar which is design like a bird giving it a highly creative design especially with the fish lid. The body of the bird is a mica clay which can be found in Taos, New Mexico. The colors, caused by smoke and fire, range from red to orange to gray. He added Heishi to the circles which added an extra step in creative design. Heishi is a drilled olive shell that is then ground into beads which are often used in jewelry making. Russell added a copper leaf which accents the colors in this jar beautifully.
