While going through an old photo album at the gall While going through an old photo album at the gallery, I came across this extraordinary image of Charles Loloma at his workbench at Hopi. In the photo, he holds one of his gold bracelets, an inlaid Hopi Kachina mask, and a second gold bracelet frame unset, yet already bearing the distinct style that would go on to redefine the boundaries of Native American jewelry. Standing just behind him is his niece, Sonwai, who apprenticed under Loloma in that studio. It was there that she absorbed the discipline, vision, and philosophy that continue to inform her celebrated work today. Though Loloma’s creations are now recognized as icons of contemporary Native art, he was once met with resistance—dismissed by some as “not Native enough.” He understood these criticisms but remained unwavering in his belief that tradition and innovation could, and must, coexist. He once said: “I am Indian, and I am contemporary. This bolo tie was made by Sonwai in 2004 and is fe This bolo tie was made by Sonwai in 2004 and is featured on page 97 of her book “Visions Of Sonwai.” The coral stone is hand-carved into a face, accented with gold stylized hair forming a Maiden figure. The inlaid, hand-fabricated sterling silver body is set with coral, sugilite, turquoise, lapis, ebony, and fine-line gold accent bars. It’s displayed on a black leather cord with sterling silver tips and gold dot accents. The piece can also be removed from the cord and worn as a pendant, which would pair well with a leather cord, sterling silver chain, or neck wire.
