She added accents of 14k fine-line gold bars adding to the overall colors palette of a sunseting to-night landscape at the Hopi Mesa. She signed the inside of this bracelet “Sonwai” with her hallmark. Sonwai is the niece of Charles Loloma. Working from Hotevilla, Arizona she creates inlay pieces that honor Hopi tradition while pushing contemporary American Indian jewelry. What do all these pieces have in common? They’re What do all these pieces have in common? They’re created using one of the most expressive techniques in Native American jewelry: tufa casting. This process starts with carving a design into a soft, porous volcanic stone called tufa. When molten silver or gold is poured into the mold, the stone leaves behind a rich, organic texture—no two casts are ever the same. The mold often breaks after use, making each piece an original. Tufa casting bridges the ancient and the modern, allowing for sculptural form, texture, and fine inlay work—all visible here in pieces by Robert Begay, Charles Loloma, Ric Charlie, Darryl Dean Begay, and Carl and Irene Clark. It’s not just technique—it’s tradition and contemporary jewelry innovation.
