What do all these pieces have in common? They’re

What do all these pieces have in common? They’re created using one of the most expressive techniques in Native American jewelry: tufa casting.

This process starts with carving a design into a soft, porous volcanic stone called tufa. When molten silver or gold is poured into the mold, the stone leaves behind a rich, organic texture—no two casts are ever the same. The mold often breaks after use, making each piece an original.

Tufa casting bridges the ancient and the modern, allowing for sculptural form, texture, and fine inlay work—all visible here in pieces by Robert Begay, Charles Loloma, Ric Charlie, Darryl Dean Begay, and Carl and Irene Clark.

It’s not just technique—it’s tradition and contemporary jewelry innovation.

This belt buckle by Navajo artists Carl and Irene Clark showcases their signature micro-inlay mastery. Created over 42 years ago, it features the Navajo Moon God and a stylized Yei figure set in jet background. The micro fine inlay consists of turquoise, lapis, coral, mother of pearl, and shell—depicting a cosmic night sky. This early example of their work, it blends traditional Navajo symbolism with exceptional craftsmanship. Stamped with the Clarks’ hallmark and finished with hand-stamped silver design on the back.

We were honored to place this museum-quality necklace by Raymond Yazzie into a private collection.

The necklace features rare fossilized Lone Mountain turquoise, formed when turquoise replaced a crinoid stem fossil—creating an organic pattern unlike any other.

Yazzie’s precision is on full display in the two gold beads, each inlaid with micro-fine opal, fossil turquoise, coal, and lapis, and sugilite. The colors elevate the deep blue-green stones.
