Gifts from the Open Road — new mixed-media work by David Newman
(Santa Fe, NM) — Stories of the Southwest, a new exhibition of mixed-media works by artist David Newman, opens at Faust Gallery on Friday, July 10, with a special reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception takes place at the gallery’s new location on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Marcy Street, in the heart of downtown Santa Fe just off the historic Plaza.
Newman works in mixed media and acrylic, and his original constructions combine his love of American nostalgia and pop culture with iconic imagery of the American Southwest.
“My body of work is shaped by the landscapes and historic remnants of the American Southwest. Most of my inspiration comes from nature, the dynamic skies found across the West, weathered signs, and rust. I love rust. The nostalgic appeal of mid-century Americana is woven into each piece, evoking memories from my childhood in Anaheim, California.”
Newman’s mixed-media collages all start with a road trip. He takes his own photographs and combines them with things he finds along the way — reclaimed wood and metal, vintage postcards, maps, and 20th-century print ephemera — to create his one-of-a-kind pieces. These richly textured compositions reflect his fascination with the past while keeping a bold, contemporary edge.
“In my creative process, I use many different mediums, including collage, acrylic, and 3-D objects. These new works reflect my continued interest in and respect for native culture, the history of the Southwest, and the beautiful state we live in. In these works, I feel great emotion and a sense of creating a unique world for others to feel and experience.”
