What do all these pieces have in common? They’re What do all these pieces have in common? They’re created using one of the most expressive techniques in Native American jewelry: tufa casting. This process starts with carving a design into a soft, porous volcanic stone called tufa. When molten silver or gold is poured into the mold, the stone leaves behind a rich, organic texture—no two casts are ever the same. The mold often breaks after use, making each piece an original. Tufa casting bridges the ancient and the modern, allowing for sculptural form, texture, and fine inlay work—all visible here in pieces by Robert Begay, Charles Loloma, Ric Charlie, Darryl Dean Begay, and Carl and Irene Clark.
