b. 1958 · Diné (Navajo) & Ute sculptor · Kirtland, New Mexico
Oreland C. Joe, Sr. is among the most distinguished Native American sculptors working today. Of Diné (Navajo) and Ute descent, he was born in Shiprock, New Mexico, in 1958 and works in stone and bronze — carving marble, alabaster, and limestone into figures rooted in Native history, ceremony, and dignity.
In 1993 he became the first Native American member of the Cowboy Artists of America, where he has earned multiple Gold and Silver medals, and in 1996 he created the monumental 22-foot bronze of Chief Standing Bear in Ponca City, Oklahoma. His work is held in private, corporate, and museum collections across the United States and abroad.
