David Johns Biography

David Johns is a Navajo artist whose work is grounded in the cultural traditions, history, and enduring spirit of the Southwest. Raised in a traditional Navajo way, Johns developed an artistic vision shaped by the land, stories, and lived experience of his heritage. That foundation continues to inform his work, giving it both a strong sense of identity and a deep emotional and cultural resonance.

Johns is especially known for his dramatic abstract landscapes and evocative portraits, works that balance atmosphere, structure, and feeling with remarkable clarity. His paintings often move between representation and abstraction, combining bold color, symbolic form, and expressive composition to create images that feel both deeply personal and broadly universal. Whether portraying a figure or interpreting the landscape, he brings a sense of presence and inner life to his subjects that makes his work instantly memorable.

His art reflects a world rich in myth, history, language, and memory. Rather than simply illustrating these influences, Johns transforms them into a distinct contemporary visual language—one that honors tradition while remaining wholly his own. This ability to translate personal history and cultural experience into powerful works of art has made his paintings especially compelling to collectors and viewers alike.

Johns’ work has been recognized for its originality and spiritual depth. Pulitzer Prize–winning author N. Scott Momaday described him as a seer, praising his ability to help others see through his artwork and referring to his gift as “the essential spirit of creation.” That description remains a fitting expression of Johns’ artistic achievement. His paintings do more than capture a likeness or a scene; they convey mood, memory, and a larger sense of meaning.

Throughout his career, David Johns has created work that speaks to both heritage and imagination, drawing from Navajo tradition while exploring the expressive possibilities of contemporary painting. The result is a body of work distinguished by its authenticity, visual power, and profound connection to culture, place, and spirit. His paintings continue to stand as compelling expressions of an artist whose vision is rooted in tradition and alive with creative force.

How to Measure a Painting for Your Space

Before purchasing a painting, measure the width and height of the wall area where you plan to place it. Also note any nearby furniture, windows, doorways, or architectural features that may affect how the work fits visually.

If the painting will hang above a sofa, bed, console, or mantel, measure the furniture as well. A common design guideline is to choose artwork that is about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the furniture below it, though this can vary depending on the look you want.

Be sure to review the painting’s full dimensions, including the frame and depth, since these affect how much space the piece will occupy. To help visualize the scale, mark the artwork’s dimensions on the wall with painter’s tape.

When hanging the work, a common starting point is to place the center of the painting around 57 to 60 inches from the floor, adjusting as needed for furniture placement, ceiling height, and the proportions of the room.

If you are local to Santa Fe or Scottsdale, we are happy to assist with delivery and place the painting in your home so you can see how it looks in the space. This allows you to experience the scale, presence, and placement of the work before making your final decision.
