Carl and Irene Clark Earrings in Micro-Fine Inlay
Small as they are, these earrings hold a remarkable amount of handwork. First, each stone was cut into tiny pieces. Then the pieces were fitted side by side so tightly that the coral, lapis, turquoise, and mother of pearl flow together like brushstrokes. As a result, the earrings read as color and light rather than separate stones.
At ⅝ in. long and ½ in. wide, they are easy to wear every day, and the post backs keep them close to the ear. In addition, the hand-fabricated silver frame gives each earring a clean edge, so the inlay stays the focus.
About Carl and Irene Clark
Carl and Irene Clark are a Navajo husband-and-wife team and two of the original masters of micro-fine inlay. Carl taught himself silversmithing in 1973, then taught Irene the following year. Together they studied ancient jewelry and developed the color-blending, curved inlay that Carl calls “intarsia inlay.” Their work has won Best of Show awards and has been shown at the Heard Museum and the Smithsonian. Today, a pair of Carl and Irene Clark earrings is an accessible way to own their signature inlay.
