Howling Wolf Overlay Clip Earrings

These gold wolf earrings by Dina Huntinghorse show a pair of wolves in 14k gold over sterling silver. On one earring, a wolf raises its head to howl. On the other, a wolf calls out in profile. Dina engraved each coat with fine lines, and she set both against a hand-chiseled silver background framed by a wide band of polished gold. The round discs dangle from clip-on tops, and the backs carry her stylized “DH” hallmark.

Metal — 14k gold over sterling silver

Design — Howling wolves

Dimensions — 1⅛ × 1 in.

Closure — Clip-on, dangle

Hallmark — Signed with her stylized “DH” hallmark, stamped “Sterling” and “14K”

Gold Wolf Earrings in Overlay

Dina built each earring in layers. First, she cut the wolf head from 14k gold and engraved the fur by hand. Then she set it over a sterling silver base and chiseled the background with fine radiating lines, so the silver seems to shimmer like moonlight. As a result, the gold wolves stand out in clear relief. In addition, the two poses give the pair a sense of conversation, as if the wolves are calling to each other.

The design ties closely to her pendants. For example, her howling wolf and moon pendant uses the same gold rim, chiseled sky, and engraved coat, so the earrings make a natural match. Meanwhile, the clip-on tops make these gold wolf earrings an easy choice for anyone without pierced ears.

Dina Huntinghorse · Wichita

Jeweler  ·  Wichita and Affiliated Tribes of Oklahoma

Dina Huntinghorse is a Wichita jeweler raised in southwestern Oklahoma. She works in sterling silver and gold, setting high-grade turquoise, coral, and sugilite into pieces built around the animals of the Plains: horses, wolves, bears, and buffalo.

She began as a painter, then learned beadwork from her aunt. Her beaded deerskin purses are in the permanent collection of the Heard Museum. In 1989, she married Navajo silversmith Herbert Taylor, who taught her inlay, lapidary, and overlay. After his death in 1996, she carried his techniques forward and developed a style all her own.

Today she designs and builds each piece by hand, working in silver, 14k and 18k gold, and diamonds. She exhibits at the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market, and her work belongs to private collections across the Southwest.
