SHELDON HARVEY
About the Artist
Sheldon Harvey is a multidisciplinary artist best known for his wood sculptures and his acrylic and oil paintings, all of which depict stylized Navajo Yei’s. To bring his vision to life, he draws on an unusually wide range of materials — combining different woods, acrylic paint, fabrics, and parrot feathers within a single work.
The Yei is a spirit being drawn from the Navajo creation story, which traces the journey of humankind through four successive worlds. The very first of these worlds is believed to be home to the dark Yei that carries the Air-Spirit — insect-like figures rendered in deep, vivid color. It is this First World Being that inspires Sheldon’s work, which he interprets through richly textured paint, fabric, and feather.
Sheldon’s art has been included in dozens of major collections across the United States and around the world, and his accolades include a first-place ribbon at the 2016 Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial. Through his distinctive command of design, texture, color, and style, he has reshaped how the world sees the Navajo Yei in both sculpture and painting, and he is sought after by collectors worldwide.
