SHELDON HARVEY

About the Artist

Sheldon Harvey is a multidisciplinary artist best known for his wood sculptures and his acrylic and oil paintings, all of which depict stylized Navajo Yei’s. To bring his vision to life, he draws on an unusually wide range of materials — combining different woods, acrylic paint, fabrics, and parrot feathers within a single work.

The Yei is a spirit being drawn from the Navajo creation story, which traces the journey of humankind through four successive worlds. The very first of these worlds is believed to be home to the dark Yei that carries the Air-Spirit — insect-like figures rendered in deep, vivid color. It is this First World Being that inspires Sheldon’s work, which he interprets through richly textured paint, fabric, and feather.

Sheldon’s art has been included in dozens of major collections across the United States and around the world, and his accolades include a first-place ribbon at the 2016 Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial. Through his distinctive command of design, texture, color, and style, he has reshaped how the world sees the Navajo Yei in both sculpture and painting, and he is sought after by collectors worldwide.

This stylized Navajo Yei wood sculpture by Sheldon Harvey is hand-cut and assembled; the figure stands on a black metal base and is brought to life with vivid painted color and feather accents.

The figure is bold and graphic, with a broad headdress, geometric body, and a lively surface full of movement. Bright reds, oranges, purples, yellows, and blues animate the carved form, giving the piece warmth, energy, and visual rhythm. The painted patterns and sculpted shapes work together beautifully, so the sculpture has the effect of a painting in three dimensions.

What makes this piece especially compelling is the balance between structure and spontaneity. The form is carefully built, while the hand-painted surface keeps it feeling personal and alive. The feather accents add texture and lift, softening the angular lines of the wood and giving the sculpture an added sense of motion and character.

This piece displays well on a console, pedestal, shelf, or tabletop, where its vertical shape and vibrant color can stand out. It would make a distinctive addition to your collection.

How to Measure for Sculpture

Before purchasing a sculpture, measure the height, width, and depth of the area where it will be placed. Be sure to consider nearby furniture, walkways, doorways, and architectural features so the piece feels well-proportioned in the space.

If the sculpture will sit on a pedestal, table, console, or shelf, measure that surface as well to ensure there is enough room for the work to sit securely and comfortably. It is also important to review the sculpture’s full dimensions and weight, especially for larger or heavier pieces.

A simple way to visualize placement is to mark out the sculpture’s footprint on the floor or surface with painter’s tape, or use paper cut to size. This can help you better understand how much space the piece will occupy from every angle.

If you are local to Santa Fe or Scottsdale, we are happy to assist with delivery and place the sculpture in your home so you can see how it looks in the space.
