Walking in Harmony.

This archival artist profile documents the early career of one of the original founders of ARTIST HOPID — and captures a moment when Lomawywesa was helping redefine what contemporary Hopi painting and jewelry could be.

Born in 1942 in Keams Canyon and raised within the cultural and ceremonial traditions of Shungopavi, Lomawywesa’s work bridged visual art, poetry, and cultural continuity at a time when Native artists were still fighting to be recognized within the fine art world.

Jesse Monongya was renowned for his extraordinary Jesse Monongya was renowned for his extraordinary attention to detail, exemplified in this 14k gold and sterling silver inlaid bracelet. Working in his signature fine micro-inlay technique, Monongya transforms the surface into a space theme—planets, stars, and galaxies rendered in inlaid stones.

The composition features turquoise, jet, lapis lazuli, coral, sugilite, mother-of-pearl, fossilized coral, and gold accents, all meticulously set and separated by delicate gold fine-line spacers.

The result is an architectural inlay that moves seamlessly across the bracelet’s surface.
The sides of the bracelet are finished with a subtle, textured gold contrast, accented by shooting-star motifs set with diamonds—an understated yet powerful detail that enhances the cosmic theme.

The interior is signed “JMonongya”.
A masterful example of Jesse Monongya’s ability to merge narrative, precision, and innovation, this bracelet stands as both wearable art and a testament to his visionary approach to contemporary Native American jewelry.
